What is 316 Stainless Steel
What exactly is 316 Stainless Steel?
The addition of alloys is often done to steel in order to enhance the desired properties. Marine-grade stainless steel, is known as Type 316, is resistant to aggressive environments.
There are various types made of stainless steel. Some of the most popular types are L F, N, and H variations. Each has its own distinct characteristics, as well as each is employed for specific purposes. L is a reference to 316L steel having a carbon content below the 316.
312, 316, and 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
Although similar to the Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, Type 316 and 316L both have superior resistance to corrosion and are more robust at high temperatures. They can't be strengthened by heat treatment , and can be easily stretched and shaped.
Difference between 316 and 316L Stainless Steel
Steel 316L has less carbon than 316. But despite having a lesser carbon contents, 316L is very similar to 316 nearly in every way. The price is comparable, they are both tough and resistant to corrosion, which makes it a suitable choice for stressful situations.
However, for projects that require lots of welding is a better choice , as 316L is more susceptible to welding corrosion than those using 316L (corrosion in the welding). But, the 316 is able to be annealed in order to prevent the attenuation of welding. Additionally, it is a appropriate stainless steel for high temperatures and high corrosion and that is the reason it is so well-liked in marine and construction projects.
Neither 316 nor 316L is the most economical option. The 304 is similar to the 304L however the cost is lower. Both are not as durable as the 317 or 317L which have a higher molybdenum levels and superior overall corrosion resistance.
