Our heroine, Dr. Wanda L. Willing, receives a classic Nigerian 419-type scam e-mail from a "Dr. Johnson Efedi" of Lome, Togo who comes across an abandoned bank account at the bank he works for. He needs Wanda's assistance in liberating these funds and I assume he'll be prepared to cut her in for a healthy slice of the pie.
This game almost didn't get off the ground at all. When it finally did, it took more unlikely twists and turns over the next eleven weeks than a bad soap opera, including a fairly short-lived spin-off game (see The Hans Karl Letters), all courtesy of a phony scammer and a phony organized crime captain.

The Banking law and guideline here stipulates that if such money remained unclaimed after long period,the money will be transfered into the bank treasury as unclaimed bills.The request for a transfer for a foreigner as next of kin in this business is occasioned by the fact that the customer was a foreigner and an indegine can not stand as next of kin to the deceaed family.
This is the story in a nutshell.
Now I want an account overseas where I can transfer this funds. Thereafter, I had planned to destroy all related documents for this account. It is a careful network and for the past eleven months we have worked out everything to ensure a hitch-free operation.
The amount is not so much at the moment and plus all the accumulated interest the balance in this account stands at-(US$ 9.5 million US dollars). Rest assured, I have no intention of proceeding with the transaction
in Amsterdam now. Certainly not without your advice. I was just
mentioning to you that arrangements had already been made for the
meeting. I had no idea that you knew nothing of this. Mr. Sankoh had
informed me that you were ill and did not wish to be bothered with the
fine points of the transaction.
Unfortunately, I do not have his telephone number. Don't you have it?
I never did communicate with him by telephone as I am unable to do so.
Did he not explain this to you either? I am functionally deaf. It's
all but impossible for me to hear anything over the phone. I could
give you his email address if you don't have it.
I have already sent him the $4200 to cover his and your plane fare to
Amsterdam. Frankly, I'm beginning to see that this was a mistake. The
$17,500 I was to bring to Amsterdam is for the administrative charges,
customs charges and something else that I can't remember right now.
Does this sound right to you so far? Originally, Mr. Sankoh had stated
originally that these costs would not exceed $12,000 so a $5,500
increase in these charges did not make me very happy. I was beginning
to think that getting myself into this whole thing was a very big
mistake.
I'm sorry to hear that Mr. Sankoh has kept you in the dark about this.
I guess I should have contacted you sooner. I will email Mr. Sankoh
and tell him that I am postponing my meeting with him until further
notice.
