The Beverly Murray Letters

[ PAGE ONE ]

I received the following solicitation from some scammer claiming to be a deaf mute. I wasn't really looking to start a new game at this moment but I thought that this would be perfect for my hearing impaired character, Wanda Willing.

In this game, Wanda travels to Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire to retrieve a can full of cash. Unfortunately, her contact refuses to supply her with a photograph of himself and Wanda refuses to meet with him without it.

Conventions within the thread:

E-mails from the fraudsters are in black.
E-mails from me (Wanda) are in italicized green.
Red X's represent characters that have been changed to protect personal info.
Comments from me are in bold black.

The game commences with the scammer's initial e-mail.

Subject: From Madam Beverly Murray

Hello,

My name is Madam Beverly Murray.I am deaf and dumb and I am a complete citizen of the United State of America, widow to the late former minister of finance in Philippine who was a victim of the terrorist attack against the United State of America on the 11th September 2001 that crashed at the World Trade Centre in New York .

I inherited a total sum of $10 million dollars from my late husband. this money which is concealed in a metallic trunk box is deposited with a security and finance company at Ivory Coast under a secret arrangement as a family treasure. This mean's that the security company does not know the content of this box that was sent from the United State of America to Ivory Coast under a diplomatic coverage.

My main purpose of sending you this mail is because of the way I found you and perhaps trustworthy to give this priority of shipping this box of money to any address that you think is very secure and save in place with your percentage of which we shall chat on soon. There is need for urgent action because I'm paying $100 dollars per day as a demurrage to the security company for keeping this consignment.

I give thank's immensely for the co-operation as I look forward to hear from you soonest. Please you can contact me at xxxxxxxxx@laposte.net

Best Regard,

Madam Beverly Murray.

It's sad to see the number of 419 e-mails I get every day from scammers claiming to be 9/11 widows.

This one originates from Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Dear Madam Murray,

This is Wanda Willing.

I am responding to your email concerning your consignment in Ivory Coast.

I was wondering how you came across my private email address until I realized that you are deaf. As you are probably aware, I, too am deaf although I have the ability to speak.

As a fellow deaf person, I was especially touched by your email although I don't know how I could be of help.

It is terrible what happened to your husband. Are you getting over your tragic loss yet?

Please let me know how I can be of assistance to you. I shall endeavor to to whatever I can to help you in this matter.

Warmest regards,

Many thanks for your response as am very much happy for the quick response and would appreciate that we continue with this rate of understanding so that we can acheive our goal.Because of my health condition which touched you as am sure you are going through the same pain of not hearing, i can only keep in touch by email and please i want your full assurance that your honest and reliable to do this business before we can go further.

Based on the fact that this is my only hope after the sudden death of my husband which am trying to get over now,i would not want to loose this box because of the pressure the family of my late husband is making to retrive the box. I was personally adviced by the director of the company who is very close to me to move the box to their correspondence company in Africa for the safty and also to keep a distance from the family.

As soon as you are sure me that you will not sit or cheat on me due to my health condition,i will forward to you, the documents,my international passport and the contact information of the company in Africa so that you can reach them as my late husband's foreign business partner as i will also keep them informed on your person.

Please forward to me your full name, address, telephone and fax so that i can forward it to the security company as the paticulars of the beneficiary of the box.and for them to contact you immediately on how the box will be shipp to you in your country as the beneficiary. Thanks for your kind understanding and i beleive that you will end this transaction soonest.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs.Murray Beverly

Dear Mrs. Murray,
I hope this email finds you well.

Obviously, I have many questions.

First, I would like to know where you are at present. Are you here in the U.S.?

Second, why is this box of cash in Africa? Do you have ties to Ivory Coast?

Third, will I be required to travel to Africa? I don't mind doing this but I will require some advance notice if this becomes necessary.

Fourth, am I correct in assuming that you will reimburse me for any expenses that I may incur?

As to your concern about my integrity, I can assure you that I am honest and reliable. I will be more than happy to give you references if you like.

My personal information is as follows:

Name: Wanda Leona Willing
Address: 8580 West Jones St, Plano, IL, 60505

I will enclose a photograph of myself and I hope you will do the same for me.

I am now more than convinced of your readiness to work this out for me and beleive you will be rewarded greatly as soon as this box is with you so you should have confident in me as i beleive we are working with one state of mind.

Dear Mrs Murray,

I have been in contact with Dr. Salad from the Overseas Credit Commission Security Company. It seems I was under the impression everything had already been taken care of regarding the shipment.

In light of the fact that you will require more from me than simply a dropship address, I think that It would be appropriate that I receive a little something for my time and trouble.

You mention that I will be rewarded greatly after the transaction. I believe that we should negotiate the amount of this 'commission'.

For this reason, I would like to meet with you. I will be taking some time from work starting middle of next week. I could be in Manila on Saturday the 19th.

If our talks go well, we could both proceed to Ivory Coast and take care of things.

I shall start the process of obtaining a travel visa for the Philippines tomorrow.

Subject: Proposal

Dear Dr. Salad,

I have been in contact with Mrs. Murray and we have decided, due to her present condition, that I would assume full control over the consignment.

We have agreed that I should pick up the consignment personally from your facility and take it to the Philippines. Unfortunately, I am not able to be in Abidjan before Saturday the 19th of this month.

I understand that the fee for processing the Change of Ownership must be paid prior to this coming Saturday. This is where I need your assistance.

I would like you to take care of this fee for the time being and also to hold on to the consignment yourself rather than ship it.

Now, Mrs Murray and I don't expect you to do this for us free of charge. Therefore, under our proposal, she has authorized me to give you $60,000 for your services.

As a show of good faith, I will give you $15,000 in cash up front upon my arrival in Abidjan on the 19th. You are to receive the remaining $45,000 after I take possession of the consignment.

We feel that this offer is a very generous one in return for your services. We hope that you will give it your most serious consideration.

Due to her health problems, Mrs. Murray has asked that she not be bothered with the finer details of this matter which is why she has requested my assistance. Her only concern now is that she take possession of her beloved works of art before she pass away.

I will await your answer.

Dear Dr. Salad,

I must admit, I am dismayed by your response.

Here's the problem. Shipping the consignment to the U.S. is pointless. I would never receive it. Trust me. The contents of that box would never get through U.S. Customs.

Now, you may be able to, as you put it, 'beat the customs' in your own country, but I assure you that it won't happen in mine.

So you see why I wish to travel to Abidjan to pick it up personally. Paying to have it shipped to the U.S. would be like thowing money out the window. And no one gains a thing if U.S. Customs seizes the shipment.

You are concerned about losing your job? I fail to understand how you could lose your job simply by releasing the consignment to its owners. But if you are that concerned about it, maybe we can agree on a dollar figure for you where you will never need another job for the rest of your life. I can make this possible for you.

Think about my proposal a bit more and get back to me.

However, I am somewhat confused. Do I take this to mean that you are agreeing to my initial proposal?

I am also happy that customs won't be a problem at your end. Any assistance you can provide with this issue is, of course, greatly welcomed. Of course, customs will still be a problem at my end but you need not concern yourself with that.

I'm still certain that I can be in Abidjan by Saturday the 19th. When all of the details of my flight are confirmed, I'll let you know.

Dear Wanda Willing,

I have received your email and based on the fact that you are coming down here it is necessary also to get the ownership certificate processed as the court have given us a mandate and i would not like this approvals to be cancelled by the federal high court based on the time period.

If this fee is not paid before the 15th of this month, the documents will be revoked. We must make arrangement with the shipping company as the documents will be presented to you upon arrival, therefore i advise you ensure that the money is sent to them and also notify me of you flight arrangements.

Thanks for your understanding and please ensure the money is sent immediately for our own good.

Waiting to see you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Dr.Jean Salah.

Dear Sir,

I thought we were past this hurdle.

In my original proposal I asked you to take care of this fee for me. I will reiterate my original offer to you.

You will take care of these court fees for us before the deadline and guarantee that I will receive the box and its contents intact. In return, upon my arrival in Abidjan, I will give $15,000 to you personally. When I get my hands on the box, and if the box and its contents are all still intact, I will give you an additional $45,000.

If it is your job that you're worried about, we may be able to raise that $45,000 figure to help you alleviate those fears.

Please get back to me on whether you either accept my offer or wish to renegotiate it.

I will not be sending any monies in advance of my arrival, however. Advance fees tend to disappear. Please do not ask me again for an advance fee.

Sincerely,

--

Dear Beverly,

How are you feeling? Better I hope. It's always nice to hear from you.

Like I said previously, I will handle everything so that you won't have to worry about a thing. Everything is proceeding smoothly at this point.

How well do you know Dr. Salad? He doesn't seem to be the brightest star in the sky, does he?

Anyway, don't worry about a thing. I'll let you know how things go. Take care now and get some rest.

Regards.

Dear Wanda Willing,

I have received your email and it is quiet regretable that i cannot assist you in anyway to pay any fees as it is against our code of conduct here and thanks for the offer. It is obvious that after the change of owner that you have to pay for the non inspection index charges which amount to the tune of USD9,500.00.

We have to contact to the court and notify them that you will be coming down here to witness the transaction so that the appiontment day will be adjusted. Please inform us on your fligt shedule and ensure that we have to come down here with this total money including the change of ownership charges.

Waiting to hear from you.

Yours sincerely,

Dr.Jean Salah.

Dear Dr. Salad,

What kind of 'code of conduct' do you follow that doesn't permit you to pay this fee for me in my absence and yet allows you to carry out procedures to 'beat the customs'?

And what in the hell are 'non inspection index charges'? This sounds like a term someone would pull out of their ass.

I shall await your acceptance of my offer.

You must be very valuable to your firm, being the only person that can handle certain transactions.

Very well. I will shift my arrival date. Let the record show that I'm not very pleased about this.

How does Feb. 26th sound?

Wanda's insistence on traveling to Abidjan personally is obviously something he hadn't counted on but he just couldn't resist all that cash that Wanda says she's prepared to bring. I suspect that he needs the time to set up a 'wash wash' type operation to implement upon Wanda's arrival. If so, that'll be great. An operation like that will require lots of props and support staff. It'll ne nice to know that he will go to all that trouble for nothing.
